Rachel & Shane Krider’s second episode of their personal development podcast is all about gratitude. Below is a snippet of the podcast where Shane talks about how changing the context can change the way you view gratitude.

I love this concept. You will see more and more why as we go through here. This next part I find very, very interesting. Some of the benefits of gratitude are real tangible, measurable benefits from a spiritual, psychological standpoint. If you’re in a place where you’re in fight-or-flight, you don’t have the correct perception of the context of the situation that you’re in. Once you’re in fear, you’re afraid, and that’s the context: you’re in danger. I’ve seen plenty of situations pan out in life where somebody was out of their mind afraid and could not get over the fear even though there was literally nothing to fear.
I work with a lot of entrepreneurs, and a lot of entrepreneurs, when it comes to being in business have a fear that they just can’t get around. Gratitude is a great tool to get around it. The context of your situation goes out the window when your gratitude is off. When you really work on this, and you have some a-ha moments, you start building up those gratitude muscles. You can stay focused on it. You’ll be able to perceive the context of your situation a lot more accurately. It’s not gonna seem nearly as negative or dangerous as you might think it is.
There are people walking around that feel like they are on the edge of survival every day. They don’t take steps to change that because they’re too afraid to do something any different; they’re just doing the only thing they know how to do. I think we all are on that plane, playing together to some degree. I think life can change really quickly, in fact, I know it can because I’ve changed my life very quickly. I’ve helped a lot of other people do the same thing.
We have got to be able to change that context, to get out of the fear. Here’s an interesting thought; imagine this. Imagine that you’re sitting here stressed out that you have nothing to be grateful for. Now imagine the next second a big earthquake hits, the ceiling falls in on you, and there’s a big piece of the ceiling laying on your chest, and you can’t take a breath. There’s nothing else wrong with you, but you just can’t take the smallest breath of air. How much do you want that little bit of oxygen? How much is that next little breath worth to you when you’re just right there at the end of your rope? You trade everything you have in a second, everything you thought you might ever want. All of a sudden, your perception changes. You get that air into your lungs; you are grateful for that air.
